  • WHAT IS EDGE?

EDGE is a weekly ministry for 7th and 8th graders that forms them in their Catholic faith. By separating the older from the younger middle schoolers, we have more interesting conversations and cover more crucial topics in their life and faith. The goal of all our evangelization ministries is to offer every person a life-changing encounter with Jesus. This means that for EDGE youth we are going to focus on the issues that affect them the most, and how they can find Christ in the midst of a crazy life.

    WHY THE NAME "EDGE"?

The name “EDGE” recognizes that middle school youth are on the “EDGE” in their life. We, their faith community, are called to love, nurture and challenge them. Otherwise, they may end up falling off the “EDGE” and we might not see them again. That is why, we, as Church, are going to give them the “EDGE” they need in helping them develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We will foster their understanding of the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, and the apostolic traditions and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

    WHY DO THEY NEED EDGE?

First, let’s face it…We all remember that middle school was awkward and difficult. That hasn’t changed. Societal shifts, advanced maturity, and technology have made the middle school years more difficult than ever. The pressures and temptations that middle schoolers face are comparable to those high school students faced nearly a decade ago.

Secondly, middle school youth have so many options and choices before them. Our Edge program strives to meet these young people where they are socially and spiritually. EDGE provides guidance, reassurance, and discovery of the love of Jesus during this unparalleled moment of life.

Finally, within the context of faith, these adolescents will be helped to move from a child-like spirituality to one that will gradually mature into an adult faith commitment to Jesus Christ and the greater community.

    THE GOALS OF EDGE

    1. To foster a transforming spiritual experience which will allow early adolescents to experience the Word of God and the Eucharist in a deeper and more profound way.
    2. To assist middle school youth in gaining more understanding and appreciation for the Church and the faith.
    3. To incorporate the Catholic Church's vision of social justice and peace into the life of pre-adolescents.
    4. To develop an identity in middle school youth and in EDGE ministry as being a vital and visual presence within the parish community.

    A TYPICAL EDGE SESSION
    GATHERING

All gather for large group activities: opening prayer, announcements, overview of the session and ice breakers.

    Proclaiming

The lessons are taught through scripture, skits, games, and/or witness/catechetical talks.

    Break-Outs

Students are divided into small peer groups to discuss a specified topic, create a skit, complete an assigned activity.  The smaller groups allow for more intimate peer exchanges often resulting in questions then posed to the group leader.

    Sending Forth

The EDGE session closes with prayer and a reminder of how to live that day's lesson in everyday lives!

    SPECIAL PROJECTS

Special projects are also a component of the EDGE.  It is important to learn about our faith, but we must also live it!  Throught the year we will do a variety of special projects.

October Living Rosary led by the EDGE students
    November Samaritan's Purse Shoeboxes
December Crafts for the local nursing home
    January To-Go Bagged Meals
    February Eucharistic Miracles & Adoration
March Lead Stations of the Cross
May Mary Crowning & Last Day Celebration
